Day two. But is it already over?

In the past hours both the Cons and Libs have pledged a middle-class tax cut. Both are shaving sales tax from new housing. Carney wants to pay soldiers now. Poilievre says his tax chop would cost $14 billion and be financed (like Trump) by slashing foreign aid (Canada’s total budget for that is $15 billion). Carney’s been under attack for not disclosing his personal wealth. Poilievre is vulnerable for never having had a non-political job.

Five more weeks to go.

Meanwhile Trump says new tariffs are coming next Wednesday. Maybe the 25% on all things Canadian again. Maybe reciprocal tariffs on all US trading partners. Maybe a special whack on pharma and cars. Maybe leniency. Nobody knows. But he keeps on trolling and trash-talking Canada.

What will April 28th bring? Does the Greater Fool Blog Dog Poll give us insights?

Hell, yes. And it’s shocking. After all, we know from previous surveys this pathetic site attracts (apart from known commies and sociopaths) more affluent, more male and more small-c Conservative types. Net worth and income are far above the norm. Most own real estate. And a year ago most would have voted Con in their sleep.

But sea change is upon us. Trump emerged as a valid threat to our national interests, our economy and freedom. Trudeau quit. Carney swept in. Poilievre’s sloganeering, negativity and two-note campaign (Hate Justin, Axe the Tax) turned hollow. Priorities changed fast as layoffs loomed, real estate went cold and inflation cooled. Seems blog addicts, like most Canadians, think it’s time for serious adult leadership in an escalating conflict.

Well, 5,011 people voted here in the last 24 hours. Not scientific, but a huge sampling – national in scope. It’s a snapshot in time, and appears to amplify what national pollsters have begun to unearth.

Carney’s approval rating is 57% while 25% disapprove. It’s the mirror opposite of Poilievre, whose disapproval rate is 52% while 25% favour him. Compared with the numbers Trudeau was facing (16%) a few months ago, it’s nothing short of dramatic.

Most of you (56%) think Alberta premier Danielle Smith should shut up and stop talking to US media. Mark Carney has handled the issue of his personal wealth just fine (putting it in a blind trust). The ballot question is fighting Trump (53%), which is miles ahead of debt/deficit (18%) or affordability (17%). Dealing with the housing crisis is the priority of just 3%.

The best person to fight Trump?

Just under half pick Carney. Only 23% choose Poilievre. And when it comes to overall party support, of the five thousand who voted here 55% go for the Libs, 37% for the Cons and coming in a No.3 is “I won’t vote.” So, take that, Jagmeet (who gets 2%).

Another interesting bit: more than a third of respondents (36%) say they’ll be switching party support in this election, compared with the last one in 2021.

Of course, the campaign has just begun. One of the leaders could screw up. Trump could (and probably will) try to influence the outcome. Every other party and leader will now, in light of polling, attemmpt to shred Carney’s reputation, CV, accomplishments and experience, saying he’s a rich, out-of-touch, central banker globalist shill, quasi-oligarch, WEF-leaning, climate alarmist lefty quisling.

But it’s his to lose. So far Mark Carney is the guy Canadians want atop the white steed, sabre drawn, visor down, thundering towards DC, to stick Tariff Man.
