Cheaper Tesla Model Y may launch in China
A cheaper Tesla Model Y might launch in China, depending on 2025 Juniper sales.
A Chinese news outlet’s industry sources recently revealed that Tesla may release a “lower-priced Model Y” in China. The cheaper Tesla Model Y will have the same battery, power, and chassis as the current Model Y–meaning the Juniper.
In late February, Tesla China started 2025 Model Y Juniper deliveries. As of this writing, customers may order a Tesla Model Y RWD for RMB 263,500 or the Long Range AWD variant for RMB 303,500. The 2025 Tesla Model Y seems to be a hit in China–at least based on early registration numbers. In the week ending on March 9, 2025, Tesla China sold 8,700 Model Ys, up from 6,700 units sold two weeks prior.
The cheaper Tesla Model Y’s release will depend on Juniper sales. While Tesla is trying to maintain much of its Juniper design in the lower-priced Model Y, the cheaper option is expected to have a few key differences.

According to CNEV Post, Tesla China is developing the cheaper Model Y through depop, which streamlines configurations, thereby allowing faster product launches. The more affordable Model Y will not use the Juniper moniker or an English name.
Last year, Tesla released a cheaper Model 3 version in Mexico, which may hint at the changes rolling out to the lower-priced Model Y in China.
The more affordable Tesla Model 3 in Mexico featured textile-covered seats rather than vegan leather, lacked a secondary display for back-seat passengers, and ambient lights were limited to white. Tesla also excluded features like heated/cooled seats and a heated steering wheel in the cheaper Model 3.
