England has so much history. I took a tour bus in London and that bus stopped almost every 10 feet, because there was something historic that happened at the stop. When my brother-in-law Robert Mitchell went to England, he visited Castle Bolton and the town of Bolton. Now, just because they have the same name “Bolton”, does not mean that they are in the same location. The Town of Bolton is in Greater Manchester, England, while Castle Bolton is in Wensleydale – North Yorkshire – Yorkshire Dales – near the Village of Castle Bolton. The one thing that they have in common is that both “Bolton(s)” are very haunted. Let’s talk about Castle Bolton first:
CASTLE BOLTON
The castle was built between 1378 and 1399 by Richard, 1st Baron Scrope of Bolton. In July 1379 construction of the castle began. The license and contract to build the castle was with the mason named John Lewyn. This occurred on September of 1378. Bolton Castle was described by Sir Francis Knollys as having ‘The highest walls of any house he had seen’. The castle served as a prison during the English Civil War and held over 300 prisoners. To this day, locals and tourists have heard screams and moaning. Jasen Hartley of New Jersey heard a terrifying scream resonate outside of the castle and no one was there. In 1536 John, 8th Baron Scrope supported the Pilgrimage of Grace rebellion against the religious reforms of King Henry VIII and gave Adam Sedbar, Abbot of Jervaulx sanctuary in the castle. In consequence John Scrope had to flee to Skipton pursued by the King’s men but Abbot Sedbar was caught and executed. In retribution the king ordered Bolton castle to be torched, causing extensive damage. Within a few years, some of the damage had been repaired and Sir John had regained his seat in Parliament. Robert Mitchell heard screaming and yelling coming from the castle. The screaming and yelling sounded faraway, but was in the direction of the castle. Robert says that the tour guide mentioned that a tourist once saw a flying shawl. As the tourist watched the movement of the shawl, it then simply vanished. It is believed that the shawl belonged to Mary, Queen of Scots. Mary, Queen of Scots was held prisoner at Bolton for six months. The story goes that she escaped and made her way towards Leyburn only to lose her ‘shawl’ on the way. The ghostly shawl that was seen is believed to belong to Mary, Queen of Scots.
TOWN OF BOLTON
Now let’s leave Castle Bolton and head over to the Town of Bolton. They say that the town of Bolton is very haunted. Let’s find out why. I found 6 haunted locations in the town of Bolton. Let’s go!
HALL’I'TH WOOD
Hall’i'th Wood means Hall in the Woods. People see a white mist floating around. Disembodied footsteps are heard. Full body apparitions are seen. Betty the ghost will appear out of nowhere and yell at children. No one knows why Betty the Ghost does this, but apparently, she does not like children.
SMITHILLS HALL
The Notorious Pincher roams the hall pinching the behinds of young women. The Notorious Pincher enjoys pinching the behinds of all staff members. Staff members have smelled burning logs several times. Miss Snub with her nose in the air and wearing a period dress is sometimes seen by people. Miss Snub will walk around with her nose in the air and then just simply disappear. A little boy ghost with curly black hair that locals call Tommy will giggle and bounce a red ball against the wall. Tommy will sometimes appear with a little girl that some people call “Ragged Robin” because she will wear a “ragged robin” flower on her lapel. She is known to smile and then fade away.
YE OLDE MAN & SCYTHE
At this location, people have seen the ghost of the Earl of Derby. The Earl of Derby was actually beheaded in front of this establishment. The ghost of the Earl of Derby will appear without a head. The locals actually claim there are 20 ghosts in this building. They also believe there is a poltergeist, because glasses will fly off shelves. Silverware will be dropped to the floor. Door will slam shut on its own, or open on its own. The Falconer (ghost) is sometimes seen outside of the establishment. A man with period outfit on and a hawk on his right hand. The hawk will fly off and vanish, while the falconer will smile and also vanish.
WATERMILLOCK HOUSE
This house was once a WWI hospital. Mumbling voices and whimpering are sometimes heard. A staff person heard a man that sounded like he was in agonizing pain. The Victorian Lady (ghost) is sometimes seen on the upper floor. The Victorian Lady wears a Victorian type of formal dress.
THE OCTAGON THEATRE
Fida the ghost was a former wardrobe mistress. She is known to make her presence known by turning on all of the sewing machines. Locals says that Fida is a mischievous spirit.
TURTON TOWER
Locals sometimes deal with an angry woman ghost called the Mille Fleurs Lady. Locals say that they will smell floral scents that include roses, violets, lavender and sometimes orange blossom. When you get a whiff of those fragrances the Mille Fleurs Lady will appear, and she seems angry. A gentleman that was on tour confronted the Mille Fleurs Lady and she actually pushed him in the face! She does not tolerate bad behavior, especially from men.
