OTL: Ravens Sign Former Bengals, Titans CB Chidobe Awuzie
In case you missed it, the Baltimore Ravens and many around Charm City celebrated Maryland Day on Tuesday!

In honor of our great state, Ravens mascot Poe was kind enough to hand out Maryland-themed goodies at the state capital:

On the football side of things, Maryland gained a new resident with the Ravens bringing 29-year-old veteran CB Chidube Awuzie into the building on a one-year deal:

The #Ravens are signing former #Titans CB Chidobe Awuzie on a one-year deal. It’s a minimum deal for Baltimore, as Tennessee still owes Awuzie $7.5M this season. pic.twitter.com/k43XkqfCOz

It’s extra sweet when the Ravens sign a contributor on the league minimum, especially when their former team is paying the majority of his salary. Throw in the fact that Awuzie won’t count against Baltimore’s compensatory pick formula, and it’s a recipe that’s just right for GM Eric DeCosta’s liking.
This is as classic of a #Ravens signing as it gets: a veteran addition who was released, meaning he won’t impact the compensatory formula—and he’ll contribute right away in Baltimore. https://t.co/xI27bIsift

This is such a Ravens move.
Chidobe Awuzie got the biggest free agent deal of any cornerback last offseason (3 years, $36 million). A year later, the Ravens scoop him up for less and cross off another need before the draft. A good player, good fit.

With Marlon Humphrey and Nate Wiggins being the only solidified corners in DC Zach Orr’s rotation, there was no question that another reliable name was needed. Even beyond an early-round rookie, Awuzie has been there and done that, making him a great addition on the cheap.
What’s more, he turns his head to find the ball:

In all seriousness, Awuzie’s experience with the Bengals and the AFC North should prove helpful for Baltimore. While nobody can truly lock down Ja’Marr Chase for 60 minutes, here’s some reason for excitement:

By no means do I expect Awuzie to come in and be a lockdown corner on the outside. However, I do think he can readily man a starting position and, at the least, ensure Baltimore can go into April’s NFL Draft without an immediate need at CB.
Chidobe Awuzie is the type of vet that makes sense for the #Ravens
Provides the vet insulation for TJ Tampa and, like they always do, allows you to go BPA through the draft.
I would’ve liked to see Stephone Gilmore, but they go a bit younger with a bit less upside.

Turning attention to the all-important NFL Draft, Cole Jackson and others brought up the great point that Awuzie’s signing means EDC and company can truly go with their BPA mindset. While there’s always a need for corners, pass rushers, linemen and others, the Ravens won’t have to feel like they’ve reached on anybody.
It’s a great position to be in.
For me, one position that’s going slightly under the radar is ILB. Even after signing Special Teams ace Jake Hummel, the losses of Malik Harrison and Chris Board can’t be understated. The unit currently consists of Hummel, Roquan Smith and Trenton Simpson, who failed to take the strides expected of him last season.
The Ravens may elect to add competition through the draft, but over the last week I’ve come around on the idea of bringing back a familiar face:
REMINDER: Former #Ravens standout linebacker C.J. Mosley is still a FREE AGENT.
Mosley is 32 years old and is the top available LB on the market.
He is a 5x All-Pro & 5x Pro Bowler.
Mosley would like to have a chance to win a Super Bowl, playing for a contender. pic.twitter.com/5hW90nbqDW

I want to stress the caveat that this would need to be a cheap homecoming, ring-chasing sort of deal for Mosley, but I do think he could fill the “thumper” spot vacated by Harrison. Let me know in the comments if you agree!
Lastly, to bookend today’s Out to Lunch with general Maryland news, the NFL announced that Under Armour has become the league’s official footwear and glove partner
