“Public schools” again demonstrate their dangers

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Several of us here at TPOL have been chided by family and friends because we “hate” public schools. Of course, it is difficult to briefly explain to someone the failings, risks, and consequences of public schools – or as we more accurately call them: government-run, tax-funded (GRTF) schools. (And when particularly irritated with them, “government-ruined, theft-funded” institutions. Especially when people assume that (a) being opposed to GRTF schools is hatred of them, the teachers, the parents that send their children to them… and sometimes the children themselves.

We here at TPOL do oppose GRTF schools – very much so. To some people, our opposition may seem to be so strong as to constitute hate. But one of the many reasons we opposed these institutions in out of love. Love for the children who are sent to them and endure them. Love for the parents of the children. Parents who often feel they have no alternative and who are fearful about both their acceptance in their community and the fate of their children. Teachers (and administrators and other staff) who are trapped in a vicious system. And of our communities and nations who are so damaged by the results of the current system.

So let us look a bit more at why we believe that the public education system – including the GRTF – are a real and present danger and to be avoided and the good Lord willing, abolished.

The truth is, public schools – particularly in urban areas – present several spiritual and physical dangers to the children that are incarcerated in these facilities for 180 or more days a year. Children from age 4 (preschool) to age 18. For four to eight (or more) hours. At the same time, as has been recently pointed out, the overall record of America’s public schools has turned horribly bad in a half-century. (From Jimmy Carter creating the Department of Education to today, the States have fallen from #1 or #2 in the world for quality of education to #25 or lower, according to sources: including the very governments that run these systems.)

In just the past few weeks, the news stories appear constantly about the physical and moral dangers facing American children in the public schools:

Former California teacher of the year pleads guilty to sexual abuse of elementary students, faces 30 years in prison | Blaze Media

(Publisher’s note: We understand that many of the sources above are Glen Beck’s The Blaze, which is often attacked by some (including libertarians) as being “fake news.” However, the supporting data for these stories makes it clear that they are not fake stories.

What we see is teacher and staff member – one after another – arrested and tried and sometimes convicted of pedophilia and sexual and physical abuse of students in their charge.

Some are worse than others: the school in Colorado which had several staff and faculty who conspired to lie to government agencies and the student’s parents in order to facilitate a teacher’s grooming of the teen. A former California Teacher of the Year pleading guilty to children – quite young children – in her care.

We are told that this is rare, that 99.9% of teachers are good, moral, loving, and professional people who do not do these things.

So?

Readers may be familiar with the old adage: one rotten apple spoils the whole barrel. How many is too many? Is 1 in 1000 teachers, faculty, staff, and contractors acceptable? If it is your son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, niece or nephew who is abused? Damaged for life in some cases? Is it one in ten thousand? You, dear reader, decide.

But it is more than just the teacher in the front-page photo that is abusing their power: in some cases there are several others who are “blind” or even active in the abuse. As in Colorado.

Which also points out, it is not just the Coasts and inner cities that have such dangers in their schools: Rapid City, SD’s school district serves a population of less than 100,000. Columbine school is in a suburb of Denver: a wealthy suburb known for the mass murder of some of its students several decades ago. It is a nationwide problem, and seems to be growing worse.

Sometimes the abuse is not overt, not a direct violation of some law trying to protect students. It can be what is taught and what is not taught. Not just facts or lack of facts, but attitudes and philosophy: If anything, American schools have departed still farther from the rotten nature of the schools in the early 1960s when Heinlein suggested that a class on moral philosophy was sadly lacking in most if not all schools. Indeed, in and out of the classrooms: on playgrounds, sports courts, hallways and lunch (and breakfast) rooms, what is often the standard fare is immorality, and not moral in anyway. Pleasure first, theft is acceptable and even preferable, racism and sexism is desirable: just reversed what they claim used to exist. Teachers often know that what they are teaching is wrong and immoral – but they do so for the sake of a paycheck and their reputation.

(How is that any different than politicians and other government employees?)

These are just a few of the reasons we constantly encourage parents and families to get your children out of these schools, out of these places of danger. The choice is ours: if we love people, we will encourage them to not do the same thing over and over.
