I used to wonder why certain relationships in my life felt strained, even when I thought I was doing everything right.

It wasn’t like I was trying to upset anyone—I thought I was being friendly, helpful, or just myself.

But no matter what I did, I’d often find myself at odds with others, left wondering what went wrong.

Over time, I started to notice patterns. There were small things I was doing—habits I didn’t even realize I had—that were quietly putting people off.

It was humbling to admit that I might be the problem, but once I did, everything changed. By reflecting on these behaviors, I not only improved my relationships but also gained a deeper understanding of how I came across to others.

In this article, I’ll share seven common behaviors that can make someone frequently disliked without realizing it. Recognizing these patterns is the first step toward creating stronger, more positive connections with the people around you.

1) Lack of empathy

It’s easy to miss, but it’s a major factor that influences how people perceive us. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others.

For someone like me, who struggled to make deep connections, it was a revelation.

I realized that I was so wrapped up in my own world that I failed to consider the feelings and perspectives of others.

This lack of empathy made me come across as self-centered and uncaring, which naturally pushed people away.

When I started paying attention to how others felt, when I started to really listen to them, things began to change.

Instead of being seen as indifferent, I became someone who people felt comfortable around because they felt heard and understood.

That hit me hard. Here I was, constantly feeling misunderstood, yet I was doing the same thing to others.

5) Dominating conversations

Here’s a practical step: Next time you find yourself agreeing with someone just for the sake of being liked, pause. Express your true opinion instead.

It may feel uncomfortable at first, but in the end, your authenticity will win you genuine respect and acceptance.

It’s not about changing who you are, but about improving how you interact with others.

And most importantly, be patient with yourself. Change takes time, but it’s worth it.
